It was a moment no one expected. As I looked around me at the Scottish Resources Conference yesterday, I could see the look of disbelief in many people’s faces, as Dr. Adam Read of Suez let slip that the UK is on route to have over 7 Million tonnes of waste go “without a home” this year as an effect of the polemic Chinese ban on waste material, the policy known as “National Sword”
Although the ban only comes into effect on the 1st January 2018, the reality is that exporting to China has stopped being an option ever since the measure was announced this July with many shipping companies informing their clients that they will no longer ship to China.
As the question was asked as to what would happen to those 7 Million tonnes of waste; there was much shoulder shrugging and vague “in the long term we will …” “in the short term we will have to find new outlets”
We spoke with some our members on this subject and the consensus seemed to be that the UK would find it hard to place that material anywhere in Europe as quality tended to be low and the EU was also suffering from the same issue.
